Takachiho is the spiritual cradle of Japan's creation myths, set in a dramatic volcanic gorge in the mountains of Miyazaki. This journey can depart from either Fukuoka or Kumamoto. Depart by private vehicle from your hotel: earlier from Fukuoka (approximately 3.5 hours to Takachiho), or later from Kumamoto (approximately 2 hours).
Walk the gorge's columnar basalt cliffs and, conditions permitting, take a rowboat beneath the 17-metre Manai Falls.
